THINGS TO DO IN KENT
This has to start with the City Of Canterbury, only 15 minutes from the cottage. Canterbury is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has two castles, six museums and an attraction that lets you step back in time to the Middle Ages. The Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martins church form the trio of World Heritage Sites in Canterbury. The Abbey was founded in 597AD, and St Martin’s Church is the oldest parish church in England still in constant use. The museums are full of artifacts and fun things for all the family to do. The West Gate Towers Museum has one of the best views of the City.
Dover Castle is one of my favourite days out. Managed by English Heritage, and open nearly all year round, this is definitely one not to be missed. The castle is set high above the famous white cliffs, and boasts a colourful and fascinating history. The secret underground tunnels are fascinating as you discover the labyrinth of Secret Wartime Tunnels built deep within the cliffs. You can walk through the rooms where Sir Admiral Ramsay planned the “miracle of Dunkirk” and tour the underground hospital as you follow the story of a wounded wartime pilot. Dover itself, whilst not the most attractive town, has loads of really interesting wartime history.
The coastline around St Margarets at Cliffe has some wonderful and historic villages. Nearby is Broadstairs with a lovely sandy beach, Sandwich, full of history and Deal, a really nice seaside town. Follow the relevant link on the links page for more information.
Folkestone has a lovely harbour and is very busy on a Sunday morning with a continental market. You can walk along the coast path here to Sandgate and Hythe. The Leas at Folkestone is the finest marine prominade in the world. If you are on the Leas, the Grand Hotel does afternoon tea, with a view over the channel.
Further inland, and the countryside between Dover and Tunbridge Wells is very pretty. Pass Ashford, (about 20 minutes in the car) and you are in Darling Buds of May Country with pretty ancient villages, oast houses and great pubs selling good food and real ale.
